Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Outreach Project

The Black Health Agency are working with the NHS Sickle cell and Thalassaemia screening programme in Manchester to raise awareness of Thalassaemia and sickle cell disease and of screening offered by the NHS.

We are mainly targeting the Pakistani community in Manchester. We deliver Outreach information sessions to provide information on the diseases and find out what people know about blood inherited disorders. The benefits of testing are explained and support is offered to people living with the disorders.

We hope that raising awareness will mean that more women who are pregnant or considering pregnancy will take up options for screening earlier (by 10 weeks) and seek further advice from health professionals. We also hope that greater awareness will encourage more prospective fathers to get tested.

If you would like any information or would like to attend a session please contact Shabana Baig Project Manager on 0161 835 3393 or email sicklecell@blackhealthagency.org.uk
