African Women's Health Forum
The issues facing African women today include mental health domestic violence parenting problems. HIV/AIDS, immigration issues in some cases, culture shock and the lack of culturally sensitive and appropriate resources. The AWHF was established nearly 10 years ago to create a space to respond to such issues and increase awareness both inside and outside their community.
Aims and objectives
- To provide a platform where African women can develop work around health in education, arts, culture, social issues and community care
- To ensure representation and participation of African women in relevant decision making health forums
- To identify gaps in service provision for African Women and inadequate accessing of healthcare services in order to ensure fair access to these
- To undertake initiatives that contribute towards improving and sustaining a better quality of life for African women
- To look at the health and well being of African women in the broadest sense
- To organise health days, seminars, conferences and workshops on issues that affect African women
- To network with other African women’s groups and organisations
The AWHF uses an approach of community participation and consultation. This can take the form of health events such as the highly successful "Love Africa" gathering on Valentines Day 2004 to raise awareness of sexual health and HIV/AIDS - or the production of groundbreaking resources such as "The Journey from distress to well being - struggle and survival from an African perspective” or “Healthy Eating and living from an African perspective”.
The AWHF is designed to give African women the chance to discuss health issues relevant to their lives but also gives the opportunity to meet in a supportive and understanding environment.
