Volunteering for the African AIDS Helpline

The African AIDS Helpline is looking for individuals to become volunteer helpline operators on our National African AIDS Helpline. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer helpline advisor, email julian@blackhealthagency.org.uk for more information.
Sometimes talking to people about their health, especially their concerns about HIV/AIDS, children worried about their parents who might be HIV positive, carers and professionals seeking information etc can be challenging. A person may feel intimidated and frustrated when trying to get answers regarding her/his HIV treatment questions.

You can help make a difference in these people’s lives by becoming a helpline advisor with the African AIDS Helpline. Helpline Advisors are committed to empowering callers to take steps to actively participate in their own health care and treatment decisions, and also explaining a range of issues to people calling varying from where to test, treatment options, side effects, prevention, where to go for support, starting families – the list is endless!

Through the helpline, callers can obtain advice on treatment information and health charting tools in African languages available on the line, referrals to HIV health and social care support, and assistance from highly trained helpline advisors to help formulate answers about treating HIV. In addition, all helpline advisors have access to continuing support, training and development and support to maintain their knowledge about HIV treatment.

Individuals who are interested in becoming volunteer advisors must attend training and commit to one 4-hour shift a week for six months. Shifts occur Monday–Friday 10am–6pm. If you are interested in becoming a helpline advisor, please print out and fill in the volunteer applications on our website www.blackhealthagency.org.uk . Or alternatively print out and  fill in the form below and post it to the following address: Black Health Agency, 464 Chester Road, Manchester, M16 9HE.  Once they have been received, we will contact you to talk about your interests.
