MRHF send out a regular weekly email bulletin on Thursdays, containing information for all our newsletter email group. For the convenience of our stakeholders and for those who might want to find out more about the Forum, we are also publishing that information to the BHA website. Feedback would be very welcome. Increasing participation of BME communities in health and social care research - Free Workshop

3 November 2008 9:30 am - 1:00 pm at Manchester GMCVO


Ethnic Health Forum is coordinating workshops with staff from BME VCS organisations, looking at the importance of research and its impact on NHS policies and practices.
These workshops will be delivered by people from the academic sector and the NHS R&D Department and health promotion specialists.
Workshops will also be held in Rochdale (13 November) and Salford (17 November)

NHS Direct joins forces with NHS Choices online

From the end of October, the public will be able to access all NHS online health information from one website, www.nhs.uk

The NHS’s two primary national websites, NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk ) and NHS Direct (www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk ) are joining forces to provide a comprehensive ‘front door’ to all available online health information and services.

The postcode lottery of social care

Ways of making England's social care system fairer have been recommended by a government-backed review.

The Commission for Social Care Inspection suggested changes to the existing criteria used by local social services departments to decide who gets help.

Patients to be given right to self-refer

For the first time, patients are to be given the right to seek treatment on the NHS for muscular aches and pains, speech difficulties and nutritional advice without going through their GP.

Reaching Out

Reaching Out is a city-wide initiative aimed at raising awareness of drugs and alcohol related issues among BME communities.
They are currently looking for local BME community groups/organisations to work alongside the project in delivering drug and alcohol education and awareness sessions and supporting users, families and carers in accessing treatment or related services.  Please note they are offering organisations payment of up to £2,000 for delivery of this service.

You're Welcome

Government Office for the North West is pleased to announce that Department of Health funding has been secured to recruit two You're Welcome Implementation Leads, based within the Children and Learners Team. This exciting opportunity will require the successful candidates to lead the
implementation of the You're Welcome Quality Criteria across Cheshire / Merseyside and Cumbria / Lancashire to help health services 'get it right' and become young people friendly.  The post holders will be based in the Sexual Health Networks, with clear reporting to the Regional Project Lead based in Government Office for North West in Manchester.

Thanks to the Big Lottery Fund and their Changing Spaces programme, Mind has been announced as an award partner to run an open grant scheme funding projects around England over the next five years. These projects will integrate mental health service users into the community via the delivery of environmental projects conducive to good mental and physical health.

BME Advisory Panel for Cancer Patients in Black Minority & Ethnic (BME) Communities

The National Cancer Action Team is working to develop the first National BME Cancer Patient Advisory Panel which aims to offer BME patients and their carers with a national voice to:
Help shape the development of culturally sensitive services through feeding experiences at a national level to service providers;
Help develop and shape culturally appropriate patient information through advising the reference group of the national cancer patient information pathways project;
Advise the National Cancer Action Team on ways improve the experiences to BME cancer patients & their carers

The advisory panel will also help:
To support commissioners develop appropriate monitoring and measurement of services to BME cancer patients
Providers improve their services through sharing the experiences of BME patients and identifying areas of good practice

Stella Shyanguya, the National BME Cancer Patient Advisory Panel Project Manager, would be interested in hearing from colleagues who work with BME cancer patients, in order to send some promotional material about how patients/carers can join the group.
