Mental health sufferers hard hit by new benefit rules, charities warn

Reforms to work capability assessment likely to leave those with mental health issues unsupported
The government's new benefit rules will have a negative impact on people with mental health problems, charities fear.

From 27 October, a new employment and support allowance (ESA) replaced incapacity benefit. New claimants will have to undergo a "work capability assessment" and mental health charities are worried that under the new rules, those with mental health problems will be worse off.

Community Engagement Officer
Full-time:  35 hours per week
Salary:  NJC Grade – Scale 6 to SO2 Dependent on experience
Based:  Great Jackson Street, Manchester
Fixed Term until 31 March 2011

The LINk is a network of local people, organisations and groups that want to make Health and Social Care services better.  LINks gives everyone in the community – from individuals to voluntary groups –the chance to say what they think about local health and social care services and their experiences. The LINk will be a way of telling the people who purchase, provide and manage local services what is working and what isn’t, as well as suggesting ideas that could make services better.

The community engagement officer within LINk will have experience in working in the community and public involvement.   The post holder will have opportunities to work across a broad range of activities within a small team and liaise with other LINk staff.  The post holder will be experienced in community development and engagement with excellent communication skills to carry out detailed research into a wide range of health and social care issues of interest to the LINk and present the information clearly and concisely to a wide range of stakeholders.

Head of Support Services, Muslim Youth Helpline

Salary: £25,000 - £30,000

The Muslim Youth Helpline (MYH) is a national award winning charity providing faith and culturally sensitive support services to young Muslims in the UK.  Its core services are a free and confidential Helpline, and an online peer support forum.

MYH are seeking to appoint a full-time Head of Support Services to manage and lead the Support Services department at the Muslim Youth Helpline. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the Helpline provides a quality service for thousands of clients across its telephone, email and online support channels, as well as for its Prison clients. A health or social care background is essential for this post and candidates should be of graduate calibre (or equivalent). The successful candidate will lead the MYH Support Services staff team in supporting Helpline supervisors and workers deal with complex cases, and ensuring MYH provides a quality service to all of its clients through developing and implementing client care guidelines to enhance the quality of care provided. MYH is a vibrant and innovative organisation, and the successful applicant will contribute to the dynamism that lies at the heart of MYH’s success. Knowledge of the contemporary social and welfare issues affecting Muslim youth is also required.

Grant Programmes Support Worker (£18,000 - £20,000)

A key role within Trafford Hall for co-ordinating the small grants component of the training programmes, for publicising and promoting the programmes and providing general support to the Training Manager.

Trafford Hall is the home of the National Communities Resource Centre, the only national centre offering residential training and support to all those living and working in low income communities around the United Kingdom.

Call for applications to become a Right Here pilot site

 

Improving mental health and well-being for young people

Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Mental Health Foundation are inviting applications from groups of voluntary and statutory organisations across the UK, to work with them in developing new ways of protecting and promoting the mental health and well-being of 16 to 25 year olds.  They expect to select up to four partnerships to work with from September 2009 – December 2013, with one focusing on improving support for Black and Minority Ethnic Young People.  Each of the pilots will be awarded up to £800,000 from September 2009 - April 2013.  They will also provide additional support to assist with planning and implementing the work, developing the partnerships, and documenting and sharing the learning.  The deadline for applications is 18 December 2008.  For more details or to apply to become a Right Here pilot site, in the first instance, please visit the comprehensive Right Here website: www.right-here.org.uk.
