Events/Meetings/Groups:

Review of Mental Health Services in Manchester for Older Age Adults

The Joint Commissioners for Mental Health have commissioned a review of older age services . The aims of the review include identifying gaps in services and support in Manchester (including service mapping!) and identifying inequalities in current service provision geographically within the city, within age boundaries and within different population groups, especially BME groups.

Hanif Bobat at MRHF and Mary Duncan at MACC are both members of the steering group and are working with the consultants to arrange focus group discussions with the voluntary and community sector (VCS). If you wish to be involved in the review, please contact either Hanif or Mary to ensure that you are on their list.

The steering group is chaired by Tracey Langley who is the senior commissioning manager for Older Peoples’ Mental Health Services and the consultants are Cordis Bright. For a full list of members or further information about the VCS’s involvement in the review, contact Mary at MACC.

Funding:

Celebr8 (don't discrimin8)

Thanks to funding agreed by the North West Improvement and Efficiency Partnership Celebr8 (don't discrimin8) are able to allocate 8 lots of £2,500 to local authority/community projects that will support Celebr8 2008, which this year is taking place between 11 and 18 September.

Please see the brief but self explanatory form
if you are interested in bidding. As there is little time to organise a supporting event and only two weeks to apply, the form is straightforward and there will be no undue bureaucracy for successful applicants.

Please note the form includes one page of background information and ten questions over two pages. As it is an electronic form it will expand the more text that is inserted but the funders request that no more than four pages (in addition to the initial page) are returned.

As the document makes clear, applicants can be
• Local authorities or
• Community/third sector organisations but
• Preferably joint applications from local authorities (or groups of local authorities) and community organisations - although it does not matter who is the lead partner

Likewise the document makes clear that it is intended that at least one of the eight projects will take place in each of the five sub regions of the North West and that they should either focus on one of the eight "equality" strands or, again preferably, focus on two or more categories eg women and disability, sexual orientation and BME, etc. However, there will be at least some project that supports each of the eight strands.

We have received an expression of concern that the medical documentary mentioned in last week's newsletter might be seen as exploitative. Whether or not this is the case, we would always advise anyone getting involved with the media to exercise caution and check how their contribution is going to be used.
