Parenting across cultures currently remains a huge challenge. For Africans and people of African origin living in the UK issues stem from the changing cultures and value systems within which the parents were brought up in vis a vis that in which we raise our children in. We acknowledge that very often there exists a certain tension between parents’ beliefs about upbringing and “good” parenting versus what our young people’s needs become within the host cultures and what is best.
There is a sudden reduction in our extended family community networks as we come to live in the UK / abroad and as we become third and fourth generation parents. We intend to air our concerns and views as well a look at how best we can cope better and ultimately improve our parenting.
